40 years ago, Clean Break was founded by two women in prison who believed in the power of theatre to transform lives. Clean Break uses theatre to keep the subject of women in prison on the cultural radar, helping to reveal the damage caused by the failures of the criminal justice system. Through our unique work, we raise difficult questions, inspire debate, and help to effect profound and positive change in the lives of women with experience of the criminal justice system.

Since 1979, Clean Break has been the only women's theatre company of its kind, and we continue to inspire playwrights and captivate audiences with our ground-breaking plays on the complex theme of women and crime. Through theatre workshops and projects in prisons and in the community which build confidence, resilience and wellbeing, we transform the lives of women who have experienced the criminal justice system or who are at risk of entering it.

Our Members Programme is available to women aged 17 and above. The Programme offers a range of workshops and performance opportunities led by esteemed female theatre artists, underpinned by comprehensive support.
Services
All our efforts are currently focused on supporting the women at the heart of our programme - our Members - and welcoming them back to our building safely.
In light of this, we won't be opening our studios and meeting rooms for hire until later in the year.
We are sorry that we can't currently provide space for you and look forward to welcoming you to our building when it is safe to do so.
Clean Break's Members Programme is available to women aged 17 and above who have lived experience of the criminal justice system or are at risk of entering it due to drug alcohol or mental health issues.
It offers Members a foundation of learning and skills in theatre performance, creativity and wellbeing, and opportunities to engage in professional, public facing performance projects.
All workshops are led by esteemed female theatre artists and are underpinned by our comprehensive, trauma-informed approach to support women to reach their full potential.
Clean Break has run high-quality theatre education programmes in women's prisons for more than 30 years.
We're able to motivate learners who have been failed by formal education by offering courses that are carefully designed to meet their needs and interests.
Our courses are accessible to women with a broad range of personal and educational backgrounds, including women with specific needs or literacy problems, and require no previous theatre experience.
We have brought bespoke theatre programmes, productions and collaborations with other arts charities led by leading artists and practitioners into PIPE units and women's prisons around the country.
